About
In my research I intend to explore the political control of (political/legal) language as an instrument of centralization and "State-building" in imperial Brazil (19th century).
In this context, the "conceptual change" was conscientiously promoted by a political "élite" in order to control a wide-extend country.
Better than an expansion of state "apparatus", the precise definition of the political and administrative language by a small group close to the emperor was planned as the most effective weapon against centralization resistance.
Up to this point, the concept of "ofício" (officium, office), that was heavily associated to "Ancién Régime", was obliterated and intentionally substituted by a less compromised word, "cargo", ready to receive the new political significance and power needed by that "élite".
